Nanette Ikeda

Program:  Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program (APAP)

 

Nanette Ikeda worked at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program under Director Franklin Odo and Program Specialist Gina Inocencio.  She still cannot believe her luck and she is grateful everyday for the amazingly enriching experience in Washington, DC.  As an APAP intern, she created and distributed publicity for events and traveling exhibits, attended meetings, assisted in office correspondence, taught Senators’ children how to make origami cranes, was introduced to Chinese opera, and saw an Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee dance to a United States Senator’s live rendition of “Hawaii Lullaby.”

 

Professional Activities:  Ikeda graduated with a BA in Ethnic Studies in 2002 and has been living in Japan since 2003.

 

 

Leilani Takeuchi

Program:  National Museum of American History

 

Leilani Takeuchi interned as a Popular Culture Research Intern at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH). 

 

Professional Activities:   Upon her return to Hawaii, Takeuchi worked as a research assistant with the Ka Leo o Na Keiki Drug and Alcohol Use Survey.  She completed an undergraduate degree in Speech Communication and a Masters of Arts degree in Speech, focusing in Health Communication.  During her graduate program, Takeuchi received a graduate research assistantship with the Department of Public Health Sciences and joined the Healthy Hawaii Initiative Evaluation Team (HHIET).  Since joining HHIET in 2002, she has completed a second Masters of Public Administration degree with a concentration in Health Education Administration.  She has since been promoted to Assistant Program Manager with HHIET and now oversees the evaluation efforts for a statewide public education mass media campaign and for multiple school health initiatives.
