MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING:
9:10 a.m. Unofficial report.

9:15 a.m. Carita - refer to handouts given at the meeting. Reinvestment of dividend monies was briefly discussed. Our current balance is approximately 8K. The quarterly statement report has not arrived, but an estimated additional 96 dollars for the last 3 months should be indicated. Interest is approximately a varied two percent (treasury money market). Carita reported that the down payment for the golf tournament is due 60 days prior to the event. An invoice will be mailed by the facility. Entertainment will be paid at the event.
Status: Approved.
NEWSLETTER
9:25 a.m. Pat introduced Becky Morrison as the new newsletter editor. Becky will replace Hypatia. Pat mentioned that activity for the newsletter has been dormant for some time and the revitalization of this effort will foster greater visibility.
Next Steps: Pat requested that we all come up with ideas for the newsletter. Carita will send Becky labels and money for stamps.
GOLF TOURNAMENT
9:30 a.m. Robert Budway discussed the status of the plans for the upcoming golf tournament on Monday, September 16th at Andrews AFB. Pat mentioned that Monday was chosen because the hill is normally off and its generally a slow day for corporations. Robert reviewed the budget (see handout). Actual bottom line is approximately the same as last year. Bill Bigno has developed a flyer and will be sending it to Bob Rice to include on the website. Questions were asked about a save the date card - but Robert suggested that the idea be scrapped in the interest of time and that we and move forward with the flyers. Bobby Lum Ho strongly suggested that the corporate sponsors be listed this time and that the flyer be included on the front page of the website. Pat emphasized that it should be done immediately since there are only 60 days remaining for the event. Bill suggested that we create a poster for the tournament that lists the sponsors. Pat inquired about entertainment. Donna and Take reported that The Aloha Boys have been unresponsive. Donna suggested Kulias hula group in its place. Robert asked that we each try to get three corporate sponsors each (preferably ones that wont play).
Next Steps: Bill will send Bob Rice a PDF form of the flyer for the website. Robert requested that we all make copies of the flyer and send it to as many corporations as possible. Take and Donna are working together to make arrangements for entertainment. Robert is coordinating the food arrangements (in addition to the overall event!) and will make the poster with the sponsors listed. Bill will email the sponsors. John Tagami will do tournament rules. The group volunteered family members and staff to assist with the event again this year. Other details: Aloha attire is strongly recommended. Door prizes: Bobby is getting the spam, vienna sausage, corn beef, painted coconuts and free gifts; Take recommended adding pineapple; Robert will get the $100 and $50 gift certificates; Pat will follow-up on the putters and shirts. Flyers will be going out on July 5th.
Please Note: We will meet on Wednesday evening, September 11th, at Robert Budways home to put the bags together.
Pat reiterated that we need to push hard to move ahead.
PROFESSIONAL FORUMS
10:15 a.m. Pat stated that due to unforeseen time constraints, the forums havent been offered but will begin again in the fall. He mentioned that some ideas have been generated, but emphasized that we need to set concrete plans for at least 3 forums immediately so we can secure speakers.
Next Steps: For now, the following is being considered: For October - Duckworth; January - Bob Fishman (former CEO for Hawaii tourism); Spring - Charles recommended someone from the Center for Minority Veterans who happens to be very interested in Hawaiian issues.
Motion for Approval: Pat motioned for the recommended forums/speakers. Charles seconded.
INTERNS
10: 25 a.m. Pat reported that Reuban will serve as head of the education committee. This year there will be three interns. Contact has already been made with the Washington Center. Pat solicited support for the interns who will be arriving in late August. Two will be working at the Smithsonian, the other will be announced.
Next Steps: Karyn Rynaldi and Karen Uemoto offered to pick up the interns. Tony agreed to coordinate a tour of pentagon. Take stated that he would lead them through the current Smithsonian exhibit.
STRATEGIC PLAN
10:30 a.m. Charles and Pat - reported that we would continue with the existing five year strategy report since it is still applicable in terms of the formal structure of the organization, framework, goals, objectives, actions and names. Pat also stated that he will stay is the president for one more year. There was discussion of Charles assuming the candidacy, but since he didnt attend the University of Hawaii, the sentiment was that it would be more appropriate for someone else. Tony Moreno is the next candidate.
Motion for Approval: Pat motioned that the plan be revisited when we switch over to the new presidency. All in favor.
OTHER TOPICS
10:40 a.m. Bob Rice passed out a handout on the Why Me breast cancer survival group.
10:45 - 11:30 a.m. The group worked together to fold the brochures for the mailing.
ADJOURNMENT
Pat summarized the meeting and thanked everyone for their input and support. He especially thanked Robert Budway for taking the lead on the golf tournament. The meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
A Special Mahalo to the Tompkins for their continued graciousness, generosity and hospitality.
