UHAA HCRC Welcomes its 2007 Interns

On Wednesday, August 29, three members of the University of Hawaii Alumni Association (UHAA), National Capital Region Chapter (NCRC), picked up their two interns at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport .

Kamana Seymour and Vaneza Agustin flew from Hawaii, taking the overnight flight, arriving a little tired but anxious to get started on their internship.      Kamana had never been to the Washington area, in fact he said the farthest east he had ever been was Las Vegas .      Vaneza, though lived in Fairfax for several years as a youngster.      She was born in the Philippines, moved to Virginia and then about 4 years ago her parents took her to Hawaii.

They were greeted at the airport by Carita and Charles Tompkins and Pat Snyder and then transported to their home away from home for the next 3 months.  They are staying in a apartment complex sponsored by The Washington Center (TWC) for Internships and Academic Seminars.  As they arrived at the apartment building, they were greeted by two members of the TWC staff who registered them and showed them to their room.  There is always an on-site manager to help the interns 24 hours a day.

These apartments are located in an area where they will have access to the metro, shops, restaurants and convenience stores.  In fact the interns have just about a 2 block walk to get to the Braddock Road metro station.   Each room also has a full kitchen, laundry facilities, high speed internet, and local telephone access. These apartments are shared by 3-4 interns – which means they will be able to adjust to their new surroundings with other interns.

The Center is an independent, nonprofit organization serving hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and other countries by providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C. for academic credit.  The largest such program, with more than  60 full-time staff, The Washington Center has over 35,000 alumni, leaders in numerous professions and nations around the world.  For more information about the TWC go to: http://www.twc.edu/about_TWC.shtml

While in the Washington area, the interns will be invited to join in at NCRC activities, be taken on excursions and become part of the NCRC extended family.
